Hospital Room Thumbnail Outlines

Based on my thumbnail designs I have decided to develop designs 2, 3 and 15. I really like the space and shape of thumbnail design 15, but the larger window in design 3 would give the scene a good, strong source of light. The corridor on design 2 would give the scene an interesting shape. I will now continue to develop the floorplan of my hospital room design.

Hospital Room Thumbnails

Location Ideas and Rough Detailing

Hospital Room
-       - Kitchen
-       - Living Room
-       - Staircase
-       - Front Garden with a Street
-       - Upstairs Hallway???
-      -  Girls Bedroom with en-suite bathroom

All of the scenes will be in grey tones. I haven’t decided whether or not to have some use of colour in the final scene to show the funeral card.

Scene 1

Hospital Room
The Hospital room will be the opening scene of my animation; the design will have basic medical equipment and a few standard pieces of furniture. I want all of the focus to be on the Father and Daughter. I have explained in the previous post “Hospital Room Props and Furniture List” what models I will need to make. Everything will be very clean with the added use of shape language. For the hospital room I have chosen to use square and circle shapes, symbolising the caring nature of the Father and the strong fight that the Daughter is struggling with.
I have begun working on thumbnails for the floor plan and furniture placing for the hospital room, and the shape which would give the best light. I had the idea of having the girl bathed in sunlight, almost a reference to Sleeping Beauty (This would also link in well with my dissertation) while the Father can be hidden in shadow.

Scene 2

House
The kitchen will be the opening scene, set a few weeks/months after the previous scene. For each of the rooms I want them to have a fairly rustic design, the staircase will be designed of sturdy wooden posts. Wooden textures will be the most used texture of my scenes in the downstairs part of the house. I like the idea of having the kitchen based around the idea of a modern design, but with wooden cabinets and a tall shelving unit. I will continue with the theme of using squares and circles to control the thumbnail designs.
I need to have a lot of surfaces in the living room for the flowers to be placed, other than that I am looking at having a bookcase, TV and living room furniture like chairs and side tables. I want to focus a lot of time on the young girls bedroom, seeing as I would like to base the character around 7/8 years old so that father can still do stuff for her without the audience asking why he would get her ready in the morning. I want the room to be fairly cluttered with toys and books; I want the room to be the most interesting of the house with bold patterns and details. I need to have a bathroom connected to the bedroom, to show that the noises that the father is hearing are all in his head. All that will be visible is the shower so this doesn’t need to be very intricate; I need to research different shower designs. The upstairs hallway will connect from the stairs into her room, this part could be left out depending if I have him walking through an empty house (possibly with most indications that the girl has gone) or if I have the camera shot of his walking up the stairs and then walking into her bedroom.

Scene 3
Front Garden with a Street
This will be the location of the school bus, I would like a typical suburban street (taking inspiration from the streets in Despicable me). Seeing as I wanted the school bus to look like a single decker bus but I could include a school bus sign just so people are quickly made aware of why it’s there.

Depending on how much of the outside scene that the camera will see, will determine what will be modelled.

Hospital Room Props and Furniture List

Researching into different hospital rooms, I have decided that I will put my characters in a private room. Looking at machinery and objects commonly found in a hospital room, I have created a list of props that I would need to design and develop.

- Bed/Chart
- Bedside Cabinet
- Photo Frames
- Bed Table
- Window
- Table
- Armchairs
- TV
- Heart Monitor
- IV Post
- Sink
- Toilet

Young Girl and Father Character Descriptions

There are two main characters in my scene the first being of the little girl and the other is the father, who my story follows as he goes about his everyday life as if his daughter is alive.

Daughter:

The girl will only be seen in the opening scene at the hospital. I wanted her to be 7 years old, so when you see the dad doing stuff like making her lunch and packing her bag the audiences doesn't wonder why he is doing all of this for her. Appearance would be quite slim seeing as she has been in and out of hospital; I want to focus mainly on her face and her eyes having very circular features. Short hair probably tied up in a ponytail to keep the hair out of her face.

Father:
The father will have two different clothing designs, the first for the hospital scene I want him to be in fairly casual clothes as if he doesn't really care about his visual appearance. The second style of clothing would be for the rest of the film, I like the idea of having him in lose fitting plain pajamas. The appearance that I wanted the character to have was very tall and slim, with short dark hair. I thought that the father could have strong square features, showing a protective parental figure, but the body has almost given up on that feeling.

Third Year Story Development

I have decided that I want to focus my story on depression, and the effects that emotionally draining situations can have one people leading them to alter their reality. Instead of the use of colour to show their feelings, I would like to use strong sound effects and what they hear instead of showing how the world really is.

My inspiration for this idea is from the film shown in the link below, it shows a way that someone can view their world and how disorientating it can be.

All 3D

Scene 1
Father sits in a sun lit hospital room, watching the face of his young daughter struggling to fight her illness.
“It only started out as a stomach ache”
His eyes keep flitting between her face and the heart monitor line showing every beat, all the while stroking her hand. Suddenly the line on the heart monitor flat lines, (the beeping noises continues) the fathers eyes dart to his little girls face just as her eyes begin to open.

Scene 2
Fades to scene of the father in the kitchen making breakfast (clothes worn, dishevelled look)
The table has two place settings, only one has any food on it. The dad picks up the tray and walks out of the room, past the living room filled with cards and flowers. A suit hangs up on the door. (Too indicate the daughters passing). The dad walks up the stairs and into a childs room with a name sign on the door. The room is empty; he places the breakfast tray on the bed. A sound of the shower can be heard from the en-suite, a shot of the dad walking past the slightly open door shows the shower to be off and empty.
(need more things for him to do, usual morning routine to look after his daughter)
-       Pack lunch
-       Pack school bag
-       Signing trip letter
-       Ect

Scene 3
Dads looks out of the window and sees an American style school bus pull up and beeps the horn, he runs up the stairs afraid that his daughter will miss the bus. He bursts into the room. The food still untouched and notices a piece of paper on the side of a funeral invite, he collapses on the bed in tears.

Inspiration

This story was originally inspired by my own life experiences, I have been in and out of hospital from a young age and having my parents running around after me disrupting work and home life for appointments and operations. Seeing as I have first hand experience on how this can affect the individual and people closest to that person, I thought it would be good to highlight have situations out of our control can affect families.

I have also had a very strong relationship with my parents and seeing as my dad is the one who took me to most appointments because he could drive, I wanted to show the bond that happens between and daughter and her father. I like the idea of looking at his memories taking on how he felt and his own journey looking at his daughters health getting progressively worse, all the while not being able to help.

I want to show the link between happiness and sadness, looking at how quickly peoples worlds can crumble. This story is open to change seeing as this would involve a lot of different character designs, I don't want the changing character appearances to alter the audiences emotional hold on the film. I will look into how I can change the approach of time moving to fast, while having the same character.
