Limbo Visual Ideas and Research

The uppermost circle of hell is Limbo this has been described as not a place of punishment but more a realm for regret. Limbo is said to be a place who have committed no scientific sins, but perhaps they have turned a blind eye to them in life. Limbo is described as a mountain top were sinners are said to stay and wait forever floating forever mute and erased, it can almost be a pit of emptiness. Focusing on the idea of nothingness and comparing with the brainstorm that I created, the idea of the waiting room could modernise the idea of eternity waiting around. I could use the idea of the mountains in my thumbnails to see how the final design could look.

Further research shows that the environment of Limbo is very dull and spots of darkness lingers in corners, through the darkness of Limbo is important seeing as it represents the ignorance of the sinners who did not know God while they were alive.

Thinking about the design and feel of the room, I feel that it should be very open almost as if there is too much space for the furniture to be placed. I like the idea of having a realistic, modern setting and the deeper that the character goes into the hell the more terrifying it becomes. Based on the story that the group has decided on, a reception desk will be the main focal point for where the animation will take place. This area will include objects from the other 8 circles of hell, to link the areas together and also typical receptionist equipment like a computer and office equipment. Seeing as Limbo is the 1 circle of hell, I think the entrance where the character walks through into Limbo should be the first door. As the door/lift closes there could be a sign reading Welcome to Limbo, so we can still see 9 doors in the room but Limbo is not seen as a different area from hell.
